From tiny beads in face-scrubbing cosmetics to synthetic textiles and automotive tire wear, microplastics are persistent in the environment. The world’s oceans are estimated to contain 51 trillion of these fragments, yet they’re also found in the dust particles we breathe, and their potential hazard to human health is not yet fully understood. We examine the ecological impact of microplastics and what’s being done from a legislative standpoint to monitor and curtail their use.
